Orthodontic vs round pacifiers: which shape for your baby?

By Myranda Duma, Founder of Tiny Trials

If you have stared at two pacifiers wondering why one is flat and angled and the other looks like a little cherry, you are not overthinking it. Shape is the single biggest reason a baby takes one pacifier and flatly refuses another. So here is the plain-English difference between orthodontic and round, and how to work out which your baby actually prefers.

What "orthodontic" actually means

An orthodontic pacifier has a flatter, angled nipple with a scooped underside, shaped to sit more naturally against the roof of the mouth and the tongue. The idea is that it presses less against developing gums and teeth. Plenty of babies take to them happily. Some find the flat shape a bit unfamiliar at first, especially if they have already got used to something rounder.

What "round" (or cherry) means

A round pacifier has a symmetrical, ball-shaped nipple, the classic look. Because it is the same shape whichever way up it goes in, it is easy for little hands and sleepy parents, no fiddling to get it the right way round at 3am. Some babies simply prefer the fuller, rounder feel, particularly newborns.

Is one better than the other?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not met enough babies. Orthodontic shapes are often described as more gum-friendly, round shapes are simpler and many newborns love them. But your baby has their own opinion, and it usually overrides the theory. There is no one-size-fits-all here, only the shape your baby settles with.

A few things that matter as much as shape

Whichever shape you try, get the size right for your baby's age (newborn pacifiers are labelled 0 to 3 or 0 to 6 months), pick a one-piece design for the early months, and replace any pacifier that looks worn. Material matters too: firmer silicone versus softer latex can sway a baby as much as the shape does.

The honest way to find your baby's shape

You cannot tell from a photo which shape your baby will take, and buying a six-pack of one shape only to have it rejected is exactly the waste we wanted to end. The simplest way is to offer both shapes and let your baby show you. Our Pacifier Box gives you 9 pacifiers across 6 styles, orthodontic and round, different sizes and materials, plus a clip, so you can compare properly and keep the winner. Because finding your pacifier shouldn't feel like guesswork.

Explore the Pacifier Box and let your baby pick their shape.
